The sales of the Xbox, Surface and Windows divisions are growing in a stellar Q2 2020 for Microsoft – which proves to be one of the companies that benefited from the pandemic. Revenue from Windows OEM licenses grew by 7%, Surface from 28%, and Xbox services and content (video games and subscriptions, in other words) by 65%.
Moreover, we had already seen in recent days how the lockdown has had an extremely positive impact on the video game industry in the United States. Of course, the growth of phenomena such as smart working has also had an impact on the sale of computers and software services useful for working from home – think for example of the explosion of Microsoft Teams, which even led Slack to file a complaint in Europe.
Overall, the More Personal Computing division (which includes Surface, Windows, Office, Xbox, web services and so on) had a turnover of 12.9 billion dollars in the quarter, and represents just a third of total revenues: in an almost equilibrium perfectly balanced, we also have 11.75 billion from the Productivity and Business Processes division and 13.4 billion from the Intelligent Cloud. In all cases, these are substantial growth compared to the same period of the previous quarter.
The second calendar quarter of the year is important to Microsoft because the fiscal year also ends; and it was very positive. Total revenue reached $ 143 billion, about 18 billion more than in 2019; and net earnings also went up from 42.959 to 52.959 billion dollars, 10 billion rounds more than in the previous year.
