TikTok has come to the crossroads: either it closes, or it will be sold. The date, as we already know, is September 15, and President Donald Trump has no intention of granting ByteDance an extension.
The White House tenant reiterated his intentions in front of reporters, ruling out further discussions with the Chinese company to avoid exiting – one way or another – from the US market. Therefore, hopes for an agreement between the parties seem to be fading, as recently aired by American sources according to which the Government and ByteDance have entered into negotiations to find a solution that is pleasing to both parties.
The situation turns out to be increasingly confused: TikTok lacks its CEO, who resigned at the end of August, and is also blocked by the Chinese government who would like to have the last word on a possible sale of the app. Situation that the American administration does not like, increasingly convinced that behind the company there are close relationships with the Communist Party and, therefore, with the central government of Beijing, which with the app would be able to access the personal data of users and to control the movements of Chinese living abroad.
Accusations of international espionage that have always been sent back to the sender, but which remain firmly in the mind of the tycoon who, having reached this point, is preparing to press the off button definitively removing TikTok from the American market or to approve the handover from ByteDance to the final buyer. Meanwhile, engineers are ready to dismiss the app, while lawyers are working on the lawsuit filed against the White House.
A final twist cannot be ruled out, namely the sale of TikTok (USA) to one of the potential buyers who has expressed interest in recent weeks. After all, 700 million active users per month represent a gold mine, and the opportunity should be seized. The most credible buyer seems to be Microsoft – the only company that has officially exposed itself – but Twitter, Google (Alphabet) and the Oracle of Larry Ellison, a close friend of Trump, have also come forward. It is no coincidence that last month The Donald talked about Oracle calling it "a great company", the"best solution for TikTok".
