The MWC 2021 will be done, but it is not yet clear whether it will be only online or traditional. Speaking with Techradar colleagues, GSMA organizers explained that they are organizing for both events. Of course we would prefer to hold a physical event as usual, once again in Barcelona, but it will depend on how the coronavirus emergency will evolve. The association says it will constantly monitor the situation and make a final decision in the coming months, so as to leave ample room for all interested parties to organize themselves properly.
The MWC 2020 was the first major event in the sector canceled, due to the worsening of what at the time was still called only an epidemic. Alternatively it can be said that CES 2020 was the last major physical tech event; and yesterday the official confirmation arrived that the 2021 edition will be held only online. The organizers had believed it until recently, but had to surrender to the evidence.
Looking at the numbers today, the odds are more towards a digital event, but on the other hand the month of April is still far away and many things can happen. The important thing, in fact, is to prepare in time for any eventuality – just being caught by surprise forced the GSMA to cancel the event this year, instead of keeping it online only.
