The cameras of smartphones on the one hand are an essential element, on the other they affect the aesthetics. The rear ones interrupt the continuity line of the body with more or less showy modules, the front ones take away space from the display.
The main smartphone manufacturers have refined over time solutions to make the presence of cameras less intrusive: first with the notch, then with the perforated displays that have made it possible to avoid the use of bulky frames, without neglecting the retractable and rotating cameras – see . for example that of the new ASUS Zenfone 7 and 7 Pro.
What if there was a smartphone with all 'invisible' cameras? TCL is thinking about it, as suggested by a patent with which the company resumes a path taken by other competitors – see OnePlus Concept One. It was filed in March with the CNIPA (China National Intellectual Property Office) and published last Tuesday.
The accompanying drawings show a smartphone with no visible cameras. The front module is most likely positioned under the display; it is a technology ready for the market as demonstrated by ZTE that is preparing to market the Axon 20 5G. For the rear one, TCL could resort to a solution similar to that of the aforementioned Concept One, an electrochromic glass capable of changing the level of transparency. The side profile shows how the thickness of the smartphone is more pronounced in the upper part, probably the one in which the camera components are located.
However, the patent focuses on design and does not enter into the merits of the techniques used to achieve the purpose. The final result remains appreciable by those who cannot digest the presence of the hole on the display or of a very flashy rear camera. As with any patent, it is not possible to say whether or not it will result in a commercial product.
What is certain is that TCL continues to show interest in design choices aimed at concealing elements such as camera sensors as much as possible … and not only: we recall another TCL patent spotted in June in which the rear camera remained visible, but disappeared. both the front and the physical keys.
