In a market in crisis due to the pandemic, there is a sector that this crisis just does not want to know: we are talking about smart speakers, the object of the desire of an increasing number of people who rely on this type of device to get information, listen to music, watch videos, and stay in touch with friends and family with video calls.
Strategy Analytics offers us the picture of the situation regarding the second quarter of the year, to be considered on an overall level in line with what was recorded in the previous period: if between January and March 2020 sales had increased by just over 8 percentage points, in Q2 it was an increase of 6% on a quarterly basis was recorded.
The data can be summarized as follows:
- Q1 2020: + 8.2% compared to Q1 2019
- Q2 2020: + 6% compared to Q1 2020
- number of smart speakers sold in Q2 2020: 30 million
TOP 3 RANKING:
In Q2 2020 there was a recovery of Asian producers after the first quarter lockdown. Conversely, American players are now experiencing greater difficulties, given the dramatic health situation still underway in the country which not only puts companies in difficulty, but also generates a contraction in demand given the lower purchasing power of the population. A similar situation is also found in Europe, which still has to prove that it has recovered from the emergency.
Hence the growth of Asian manufacturers, Baidu above all: they are, in fact, the ones to record the best data, with "a quarter ahead" of the US and Europe. For this reason Strategy Analytics expects that the period June-July-August could be even better on a global level, with a recovery of the Western market that will further strengthen the good performance of the sector in China. The goal – still valid – is to reach 161 million smart speakers sold by the end of the year globally.
