India continues to carry out its counter-offensive against apps for Android and iOS devices. After having banned TikTok, WeChat and Weibo (and other 56 apps) last June, local authorities confirmed the rumors that emerged at the end of July, deciding today to extend the provision to other 118 mobile apps, among which very illustrious names stand out starting from PUBG Mobile (including the Lite version). Also via Baidu, WeChat Work, AliPay and APUS Launcher (an alternative launcher for Android for years in the breach).
The motivation that can be read in the new official note of the Ministry of Information Technology recalls the similar provision adopted at the beginning of the summer: it is theimproper use that the offending apps make the personal data of users, information – continues the press release – that come subtracted is sent to server that they are located outside the borders of india. The Ministry reiterates that these apps endanger India's security and national sovereignty and as such must be blocked.
The common trait of some of the most important apps listed in the list immediately catches your eye, that is, being managed by Chinese companies / developers (including the mobile version of PUBG).
The long list of applications banned by the Indian government
The impact of these measures on apps that have a large installed base in the Indian market are easily understood. PUBG Mobile developers are for the moment therefore forced to give up an important slice of the revenue that the game has produced worldwide (over 3 million dollars according to the latest estimates) a few days after the release of version 1.0 ( scheduled for 8 September next). The effect of the measure announced today by India will coincide with the blocking, for Indian users, of the download of the apps listed from the Google Play Store and the App Store and with the impossibility of accessing the related servers.
