We have already seen how the lockdown has contributed substantially to the growth of the video game industry (including mobile), and Sony's latest quarterly report is further confirmation of this. Data indicate that sales of titles for PlayStation 4 have practically doubled.
From 49.8 million copies in the second quarter of 2019 it has gone up to about 91 million in the same period of 2020. The exclusive first-party went rather well, with 18.5 million copies, mainly driven by the new chapter of The Last of Us. Last year it had been 11.7 million.
Predictably, digital download was the preferred purchase channel: 74% of the games were purchased online, a record percentage for the sector. PlayStation Plus subscriptions are also growing, from 41.5 million last year to almost 45 million. Console sales, also on an annual basis, have plummeted – but that was to be expected, given that the next gen is almost upon us. However, the increase compared to the previous quarter is significant, from 1.4 to 1.9 million.
Although travel restrictions have forced many employees to work from home, Sony's gaming division is therefore growing. Revenue rose from $ 4.3 billion to $ 5.7 billion year on year. The other parts of the Japanese giant, that is cameras for smartphones, TVs, smartphones and films, however, suffered contractions. Overall, Sony remained afloat, with only marginal growth in revenues (from 18.1 to 18.6 billion dollars) and a moderate contraction in net profits (from 2.18 to 2.15 billion dollars).
