Game of Thrones showrunners David Benioff and D.B. Weiss, will be working for Netflix on an adaptation of The problem of the three bodies, a science fiction novel by acclaimed Chinese writer Liu Cixin which tells the story of a first contact between humanity and aliens. This was announced by the company itself, which today published a post on its official website.
For those unfamiliar with it, the novel was published in 2008 and won the prestigious Hugo literary prize, before being translated and published in Italian in 2017. The problem of the three bodies is the first of a trilogy, of which the second and third parts are entitled The matter of the cosmos is In the fourth dimension.
Thanks to an agreement signed with Yoozoo Entertainment, Netflix has obtained the rights to produce the English-language adaptation of the saga. In addition to the creators of Games of Thrones, Alexander Woo (known for The Terror: Infamy, True Blood), the director of Star Wars: The Last Jedi Rian Johnson with Ram Bergman, and also the author Liu Cixin himself, along with the famous science fiction author Ken Liu who translated the trilogy into English.
The deal provides for the adaptation of the entire trilogy, but no other details have been announced on the production or on the expected release date. For their part, Benioff and Weiss showed great enthusiasm for the project:
"The Liu Cixin trilogy is the most ambitious science fiction series we have read, it takes readers on a journey from the Sixties to the end of time, talking about life on that little blue dot that is the Earth to the extreme limits of ' universe. We can't wait to spend the next few years bringing this to life for viewers around the world. "
The plot, on the other hand, seems quite interesting: it starts from the China of the cultural revolution, where a secret military project tries to contact alien intelligence from the Costa Rossa base by sending signals into space under the guidance of Ye, a scientist politically purged due to the his ideas, and then move into the present, where a scientist named Wang finds himself having strange visions related to a countdown.
The latter, investigating, will come across a video game called Three Bodies, in which the player must find a way to survive a population that lives in a world that alternates Ere of order, in which civilization can be born and develop, to Ere of Chaos, in which life is almost totally exterminated.
Eight years after the signal was sent from the Costa Rossa base, an answer was received: the interlocutor, a pacifist from a warlike planet, warned to stay away from communications if you want to avoid the alien invasion. However, disgusted with mankind, Ye decides to respond by inviting the alien to invade Earth.
