One of the tools put in place by the Italian government to tackle the spread of the virus is Immuni, the contact tracing app activated throughout the country on June 15 last. Despite the good start with over 2 million downloads in the first week, Immuni underwent a halt: according to the latest data available, only 5 million users have installed it on their smartphone.
Beyond the numbers registered by the app on the App Store and Play Store, there is a serious bug discovered by Republic and confirmed directly by Innovation Department of the Council Presidency.

- SOLUTION COMING
The bug is present only in the Android version of Immuni, while it is absent (also from our checks) in the counterpart for the iOS operating system.
Where present, the problem randomly blocks the exposure controls, i.e. those checks that the app makes one or more times a day to ascertain whether or not there has been contact with an infected user. The result? Despite having installed the app correctly, users are not tracked correctly and therefore cannot receive any alarm notifications.
The blackout of the controls lasted for about two weeks, and was then corrected automatically. To check if your device is also affected by the bug, just go to Settings> Google> COVID-19 Exposure Notifications> Exposure Controls.
The bug, says the Department of Innovation at the Prime Minister's Office, is present on different models and versions of Android, although for the moment a detailed and official list is missing.
These should include some Huawei devices and even Samsung ones. Repubblica was able to verify this on a Samsung Galaxy S10, while in our editorial team we can confirm that the problem is also present on the most recent Galaxy S20.
The Department let it be known that the technicians are working on a fix that will be released in the next update. Follow the link to download the app.
