Huawei MateBook X (2020) is official in China: finally the Chinese manufacturer's most prestigious laptop range is updated to the new generation even in the non-Pro version. The laptop retains the peculiar characteristics of the 2017 model – passive dissipation, subtlety that seems impossible, spaces optimized to the maximum, huge trackpad and frames to the minimum terms. To understand: the screen-body ratio is 90%, the dimensions are smaller than those of an A4 sheet and the weight does not exceed 1 kg.
The new laptop features a "floating full screen" display, says the company, which is coming to market for the first time. The resolution is 3,000 x 2,000 pixels, the technology is LTPS and the contrast is 1,500: 1. It covers 100% of the sRGB color space.
There's also a new pressure-sensitive touchpad – in other words with the same technology found on Apple's MacBooks – itself borrowed from iPhones. In short, the trackpad does not move physically: there is a sensor that detects the pressure and a small motor returns a vibration when there should be the "click". The sensor, says Huawei, is accurate at every point on the surface. Integrated into the trackpad is an NFC tag that allows you to take advantage of the multi-screen collaboration software service. Already known for some time, it offers a deeper integration between the computer and the manufacturer's smartphones. There is also a new gesture, a swipe with three fingers from below, to capture a screenshot.
The processors are the 10th generation Intel Core U. It goes up to i7-10510U. It is a unit with 4 cores and 8 threads with clock speeds of up to 4.9 GHz (boost). Also this time Huawei has managed to keep the dissipation completely passive, thanks to a system that includes 9 sheets of graphite and a super thin heatsink.
There is not much on the door side – and it is predictable given the extreme compactness. We find a USB-C port on each side and nothing else. Of course, charging also takes place through these ports: the included charger is 65 W, and evidently he too follows the same diet as the MateBook X because it is absurdly compact: it weighs just 94 grams and, as you can see from the images, it is very small. Of course you can also use it to charge other USB-C based devices as well. We don't have precise details on battery specifications, but Huawei promises nine hours of battery life in terms of local video playback and office work.
MateBook X can be pre-ordered in China now, with deliveries starting on August 24th. Four colors:
- Interstellar Blue
- Frost Silver
- Green Mountain Daisy
- Cherry Blossom Powder
The prices, again for China, are as follows:
- Core i5-10210U / 8 GB / 512 GB: 7,999 renminbi, equivalent to € 968
- Core i5-10210U / 16GB / 512GB: 8,999 renminbi, or € 1,089.99
- Core i7-10510U / 16GB / 512GB: 9,999 renminbi, equivalent to € 1,211
Also during the same event, Huawei also presented the variants of MateBook 13 and 14 with AMD Ryzen 4000 H series processors, therefore with TDP between 35 and 45 W and therefore a promise of power much higher than the "U" solutions with TDP limited to 15 W. The range goes up to the Ryzen 7 4800H, with 8 cores and 16 threads. The base frequency is 2.9 GHz and goes up to 4.2 GHz in boost. This chip, made like all the others with a 7 nm manufacturing process, consumes 45 W, and includes a Radeon Vega 7 GPU.
Thanks to the new processors, Huawei promises truly remarkable performance: for example, a 1 GB PowerPoint file opens in just two and a half seconds; Lightroom takes just 2.6 seconds to edit 300 images whose total weight is 7.5 GB; and it takes 4 minutes and 10 seconds to compile a project with 3.4 million lines of code.
All this power requires heat, and the heat must be dissipated. The new ventilation system of the MateBook 13 and 14, active (two fans, one on each side), has been enlarged by 40%, while the fan blades have increased by 49%. Huawei promises that the processor will be able to maintain a load equal to 40 W of consumption stably without throttling. We don't have precise battery details, but the same compact charger we saw in the MateBook X is present.
Also in this case we have screens with very thin bezels (the screen / body ratio is 88% and 90% respectively), the coverage is always 100% sRGB, but the resolution drops to 2K (2,160 x 1,440 pixels). The overall dimensions also increase a little – the thickness is 14.9 and 15.9 millimeters, while the weight is 1.3 and 1.49 kg. The power button also includes a fingerprint scanner.
The new MateBook with Ryzen 4000 H will arrive in China with the same timing as MateBook X – pre-orders from now and deliveries from 24 August. The colors will be three: Space Gray, Bright Moon Silver and Cherry Pink Gold. The prices will be as follows:
- R5 4600H + 16 GB of RAM + 512 GB of SSD: 4,599 renminbi, equal to 557 €
- R7 4800H + 16 GB of RAM + 512 GB of SSD: 5,099 renminbi, equal to 617 €
- R7 4800H + 16 GB of RAM + 512 GB of SSD + touch display: 5,399 renminbi, equal to 653 €
- R5 4600H + 16 GB of RAM + 512GB of SSD: 4,999 renminbi, equal to 605 €
- R7 4800H + 16 GB of RAM + 512GB of SSD + touch display: 5,299 renminbi, equal to 641 €
- R7 4800H + 16 GB of RAM + 512GB of SSD + touch display: 5,699 renminbi, equal to 690 €
Finally, Huawei also presented the FreeLace Pro earphones. As you can see, they are wireless with a rigid headband to be worn behind the neck. They have active noise cancellation of up to 40dB (this is the main reason for the "Pro" name), 14mm drivers, and in-ear design with three different sized rubber tips to fit as many ears as possible.
The charging port is a USB Type-C, the integrated battery is a three-cell 150 mAh that promises 24 hours of continuous use. It takes 5 minutes to get 5 hours of charging. The back of the earbuds are magnetic, and just stick to each other to stop playing and disconnect the Bluetooth. The earphones are available in three colors: Obsidian Black, Spruce Green and Morning White. Chinese pre-orders are already open, but deliveries won't start until September 4th. The price is 599 renminbi, which is about 72 €.
The 5G that does not give up anything? Motorola Edge, on offer today by Tecnosell at 499 euros or from Unieuro at 599 euros.
