Halo is called after the acclaimed video game series from Bungie Studios and 343 Industries but is a fitness band for now available in the US market. It is also talked about because Amazon launches it, thus marking its debut in the increasingly crowded panorama of wearable devices dedicated to monitoring physical activity.
Halo is a product that lives in symbiosis with the companion app and a paid service that will allow you to take advantage of its most advanced features, it does not have a screen, it is not considered a medical device, but it can boast at least a couple of functions that distinguish all the package of similar proposals.
With the Halo app (and smartphone camera) you can perform a 3D body scan to calculate your body fat percentage. In addition, the microphone integrated into the band is used to analyze the tone of the voice, detect the various emotional states and thus help the user to improve communication with others by becoming aware of how their own speech is perceived.
Although this is an Amazon product and despite being equipped with microphones, the band does not support the Alexa voice assistant, nor voice commands. The sole purpose of the microphones is the aforementioned voice monitoring function. Amazon immediately makes it clear that the voice data is never uploaded to servers, nor listened to by real operators, while the four images necessary for the creation of the 3D body scan are deleted from the servers immediately after the creation of the model. 3D.
The hardware equipment of the fitness band outlines the contours of a fairly minimalist product: it does not have GPS, WiFi and telephone connectivity, but it is equipped with a Bluetooth module that allows it to connect to the smartphone. The sensors include an accelerometer, one for detecting body temperature and one for monitoring the heartbeat.
The picture is completed by two microphones, a status LED and a button that allows you to activate and deactivate the microphones. The integrated battery promises an autonomy of about a week, while the band is resistant to liquid infiltration (up to 5ATM). There is also the possibility of using the integrated sensors to monitor sleep and count steps.
Halo is marketed at $ 99.99 (discounted at $ 64.99 for a limited time), while the paid service has a monthly fee of $ 3.99. The price of sports straps (in plastic materials) is $ 15.99, while those in fabric cost $ 19.99. It is not yet known when and if Amazon will decide to expand the availability of the band in other markets.
