Cortana will completely abandon Android and iOS at the beginning of 2021. Microsoft had already announced it several months ago, however leaving a glimpse open for some markets – the American one, above all; in the past few hours, however, a post on the official support site has confirmed that the AI assistant inspired by the Halo video game series will disappear completely from the mobile. Not only that: also from the smart speaker Harman Kardon Invoke. Finally, as of this September, third-party skills will no longer work.
The farewell of the mobile market assistant does not mean that it will disappear completely. Microsoft is increasingly focusing on productivity – the idea is to expand and enhance integration with Microsoft 365, which also includes the Office suite. For example, Microsoft cites the possibility of calling Cortana from Windows 10 for the Outlook mobile app, and soon also from the Teams app – as well as of course from Windows 10.
Interestingly, the Harman Kardon Invokes will remain functional as a wireless speaker. In fact, a firmware update will arrive in the coming months that will "kill" Cortana and enable the Bluetooth protocol. In the U.S., anyone who has used Cortana's voice commands at least once between July 31, 2019 and July 31, 2020 will receive $ 50 gift cards for the Microsoft Store.
Cortana's transition to the world of productivity will also have some consequences for the two generations of Surface Headphones and Surface Earbuds, which of course will no longer be able to invoke the assistant through voice commands in case of pairing with an Android or iOS smartphone. Long pressing of the pavilions will still call the default assistant – therefore Siri or Google Assistant. Still using the same criteria as above, those who bought the first generation of Surface Headphones will be entitled to a $ 25 discount on the Microsoft Store.
The 5G that does not give up anything? Motorola Edge, on offer today from Tecnosell for 505 euros or from Amazon for 576 euros.
