The second quarter of the year will be remembered not only for the health emergency, but also for the record numbers recorded by the App Store and the Play Store. The two circumstances are in some respects related since forced isolation and restrictive measures have given a new boost to downloads, encouraging the use of certain apps (at the expense of others).
The Sensor Tower report for the second quarter of the year (months of April, May and June) sheds light on the habits of app consumers. It starts from a very significant figure: the total number of downloads made by the two stores was 37.8 billion, a value that translates into an increase on an annual basis of 31.7% and which marks an absolute record .
- App Store: 9.1 billion downloads (+ 22.6% on an annual basis)
- Play Store: 28.7 billion downloads (+ 34.9% on an annual basis)
The pandemic affected user preferences: app downloads due to personal productivity, health and fitness, and educational categories have increased. Signs of recovery for those dedicated to travel, GPS navigation and Sport, activities that have returned to being practiced in countries that began to ease restrictions during Q2.
In addition, in the period in question Zoom confirmed the most downloaded app in the United States, while it was fourth in Europe. Zoom also achieved another noteworthy result: it is one of the few apps to have reached 300 million installations in a quarter, a milestone that only TikTok and Pokémon Go have previously crossed.
The revenue generated by the apps is also growing: those attributable to the download of games in the US market stand out. That 2020 was very positive for the proceeds produced by the Apple and Google stores had already been highlighted by Sensor Tower earlier this month: according to estimates, users spent over 50 billion dollars in the first six months.
