Amazon is increasingly determined to establish itself in the world of voice assistants. After the rumors of the last few weeks, Alexa for Apps (preview) is officially born, a new feature recently announced by the e-commerce giant and designed to make Alexa definitively a valid alternative to the best known and used (at least in the smartphone sector) Apple Siri and Google Assistant.
Thanks to the recent addition, users with an Android or iOS device will be able to use Alexa to launch apps and perform actions within them using only voice commands. Amazon takes as an example one of the most popular apps of the moment, TikTok, where Creators will be able to request the start of video recording without necessarily having to use their own hands. Further apps mentioned then include Uber, Sonic is Zynga, with others ready to introduce support over the next few years.
- Search – Alexa for Apps makes searching within an application quick and easy. For example, consumers previously could ask Twitter's skill for trends, mentions and more, and hear a vocal response. Now, when they ask "Alexa, ask Twitter to search for #Alexalive", the skill will also open the Twitter app on their mobile device and display a list of results that users will be able to consult. Similarly, users can ask the Yellow Pages skill to show them the nearest plumbers, gas stations or restaurants which they then view in the Yellow Pages app.
- View more information – Alexa for Apps also makes it easy to open the app and provide customers with additional visual information or more complex options. For example, after a user has booked a ride with Uber's skill, Alexa will ask the customer if he wants to see the driver's location on a map in the app. Likewise, do you fancy a hamburger? Ask SONIC what's new on the menu and ask for the closest location to open the map. Alexa will open the SONIC application on a map of nearby locations.
- Access functionality – Finally, with Alexa for Apps, consumers can activate any selected functionality within the application using their voice. For example, the Tik Tok skill allows customers to start recording with their voice. This is especially useful when the customer's hands are busy.
Alexa for Apps is currently available in Preview versions; interesting developers can request access through a special form that you can find in the link in SOURCE.
